Hi,

I do understand that the Church teaches that Human Life begins at the moment of conception. That is, the human embryo becomes “ensouled”, thus becoming a person.

Is Fertilization part of the Conception process? Or is Conception, understood solely on the basis of personhood, that is, a rational immortal soul is present.

To make my question simple: is Conception a biological process(fertilization → ovulation → etc) or a “moment” (personhood, ensoulment) or a time in biology where there is an independent human being, regardless whether is ensouled or not?

Is there a census in the Medical/Scientific community when exactly Conception happens?

Thanks.

God Bless,
Mateusz

I think you will find the church teaches no human knows yet when the soul is “infused” so we are to error to the safe side. Additionally the teaching concerning the sanctity of life indicates that all life whether pre-infused or containing a soul are of equal valuable.

All human life has a soul.
Conception, ie when sperm and egg unite is human life (has the same dna as when its an adult)
Threfore at least by conception, there is an ensouled human.

The answer is that we do not know. If we are Christians we believe a person has a soul as well as a body. Even if an unborn child did not have a soul the fact remains that it would have a soul after it is born. It is therefore wrong to prevent that child from being born.

It is arbitrary to p(name removed by moderator)oint any stage in the development of the unborn child as the moment when it first has a soul. The only logical view is that it has a soul from the moment of conception when a distinct individual appears.

When the zygotes merge there is conception. The egg becomes fertilized, a living human concept. The word has become flesh, a little spherical person…

The term “conception” in the medical world generally refers to the egg and sperm combining into a zygote… AND the implantation in the uterine wall… so if the zygote was no good due to a bad egg or sperm, and it didn’t implant, it would not be a conception. Whether it had a soul in that case is up for debate I suppose.
