I would appreciate (name removed by moderator)ut re the above matter.
My son met a girl from Jamaica online and had been speaking to her every night for about 2 months. She came to our home for Thanksgiving ,they got engaged, and now are planning on marrying in a civil ceremony on this Friday,12/10/08.
Everyone’s concern is “why so soon”. My son plans on having a CATHOLIC CHURCH WEDDING in 6 months although the priest said it may not have to take that long.
I just hope and pray that this is the right thing. She has a visa and says she is getting a work permit to work in this country.
Please pray for my son,Andrew and for Marcia for a happy marriage if this is to be.
THANK YOU AND BLESSINGS TO ALL OF YOU.

I’ll pray for you all Ellen. But , you know this cannot be a right thing if your son is Catholic. Catholics may not get married outside of the church. Hopefully they are not planning to live together or act like husband and wife. If they are then I hope you son will go to confession before the church wedding.

Praying for you.

I would suggest you speak with the Priest.

Is this girl a nice person?

Perhaps two months is too soon. With over half of American marriages ending in divorce, I hope it works out.

I don’t blame you for your concern–I think it’s a little quick, but my prayers are with him and his wife to be…and you and the rest of the family.

It does seem really soon and my thoughts and prayers are with you. But if it makes you feel any better, one of my sisters married her second husband after knowing him only three months. (her first husband died in a car wreck) They met at church, fell in love and got married. I was taken aback when she did it because she’s the sibling with the most level head but she did it and guess what. She is extremely happy. They have been married 10 or 11 years and have two beautiful children.

However, my sister was a bit older than your son when she married but still, it can work so if he’s bound and determined to do it, let’s all hope for the best.

How old is Andrew and what does his father say about all this?

Everyone’s concern is “why so soon”.
Well, fast relationships do work at times. My family had the same concerns with me and my wife.

I met her online on 10/24/95
In person on 10/25
She moved in on 10/31 (obviously we were not practicing our faith at this point…I don’t recommend it to anyone…and yes, i’ve been to confession about it).
I proposed on 12/21.
Wedding on 6/26/99 (another mistake cause we only waited due to money, and it didn’t end up being anywhere nearly as expensive as we thought).

And here we are 13 years later and 4 kids later. We were also the first ones either of us had ever dated.

Normal, no. Does it work sometimes, yes.

In any event, the wedding should be in a church. We for sure gained graces when we properly married that we didn’t have before. And the living in sin certainly caused strains and stress that didn’t need to be had we done things properly from the start.

Are they getting married Friday or are they getting married on 12/10?
Who knows, maybe two extra days will give them an opportunity to reconsider.

Yeh, 12/10/08 is today. 12/12/08 is Friday.

I will pray. I’ve been the parent in a quickie marriage, so I do know how you feel.

I understand your frustration…When my sister started dating they were guys whom had visas, my parents didn’t like that…AND she was just a kid…but she ended up getting married because she was pg to an american citizen… 😦 🤷

My aunt married a man, she was here on a visa, and still to this day they have 1 daughter and going strong and this was like 17 years ago…So you never know?!

God willing this is the best choice for him and they will have a wonderful marriage. If not then God has a plan and it will be for the best…hopefully!🤷 I will keep your family in my prayers, GOD bless!
