My roommate has recently decided to become a Catholic, and he and I just started attending an RCIA class nearby. They gave us a bunch of Catholic Update packets, and they have made me quite worried.

In one, they basically say that God the Holy Spirit is actually “Woman Wisdom,” when Christ quite clearly says that the Holy Spirit is a male person.

In a video that accompanies the pamphlets, telling people how to go about the mass, the priest consecrates wine in a glass container, everybody is holding hands for the our father, people are hugging each other during the sign of peace, and all of the music is protestant-like.

Am I right in being worried about this “Catholic Update” RCIA series?

I have used them selectively and our parish has them out to be taken. Some are good others???

can’t say about the video unless you give the name and who produced it

Catholic Update is published by St. Anthony Messenger Press. Each leaflet is written by a different author, and some of their authors are very orthodox and good–Fr. McBride, Fr. Groeschel for instance, and some are problematic–Fr. Ron Rohlheiser, Richar Rohr etc. They are all over the map. also some are written by lay people, which does not necessarily make their content a problem, but w/o assurance of orthodoxy.

they offer a subscription to monthly Updates, which most parishes get, or you can by past titles in bulk. Some are excellent, some are wacky. I don’t really have time to vet every title, so I use other resources.

I am not familiar with the particular issue you cite so can’t answer that specific wording without seeing the entire article and the context.

it is not specifically an “RCIA series” but several of the Updates could be quite helpful for RCIA, but if the pastor or director is unable to verify and test each and every one they get, there are better resources out there. Association for Catechumenal Ministry is the gold standard for “handouts” and the manual can be purchased on CD so you can make as many copies of each item you need, without paying for multiple copies of sheets you don’t need.

Some of the videos sold through the St. Anthony Messenger catalog are excellent, some are not, again it is up to the pastor or director to review the product and see it the content is acceptable.

Yes you are. Our parish used this a few years ago when I helped with RCIA. Whenever it was our week to lead I used other materials. Some are very good but anyone who cannot discern authentic Catholic teaching from heresy won’t know to sift out the bad stuff.
