Concerned about Cousins after they attended Native American funral

Hello all! This is a question about spiritual warfare. Unfortunately, my cousin’s uncle died 😦 what is even more unfortunate is that he practiced Native American traditions as his religion. At the funeral, according to my cousin, they had smudging and prayers to the spirits of cardinal directions. Should I be concerned that at the funeral they may have evoked demons? and that my cousins may have more demons in their lives?
 
I think it’s a most unfounded concern. Native Americans don’t worship Satan. If you look at their religious beliefs, you can see many fruits of the Spirit present, including the fact that many tribes believe in the Great Spirit. There are many archetypical religious elements involved, as well. My condolences to your cousin’s family.
 
Smudging is part of the Mass around here - mostly on the reservation. Our former Bishop had smudging at a youth Mass we attended. Smudging is a kind of cleansing.

Tho I remember getting a bit upset the first (& only) time I saw a priest do the prayers to the 4 directions. Priests don’t usually do that.

I wouldn’t worry about demons.
 
No, don’t worry. Other cultures are different.
Many Native Americans have blended their beliefs with Christian ones.

True. But it’s still nothing to be concerned about. You should have seen the send off my non-Christian uncle got from his fraternal organization. Quite an eye-opener, that!

I’ve been to a number of non-Christian ceremonies - weddings, funerals, random stuff - and I haven’t had to deal with demons yet.

Eastern priests do, both Catholic and Orthodox.

Sure it would be something to be concerned about. If it was not a Christian funeral then what ‘spirits’ were they praying to?

It’s another culture.
It’s fine. Your cousins didn’t attempt to conjure demons did they? No.
You’re reading too much into something you know little about.

Many cultures have different ways of celebrating the passing of a life. This is not to say that their ceremonies or traditions are any less respectful of the deceased than Christian ceremonies. Why would you even think of the possibilities of demons being evoked. May I suggest you do some reading up on funeral ceremonies of different cultures. You may find it very eye opening.
