I’m seeing an opus dei priest for confession soon. However, I have my doubts whether to ask him to be my spiritual director as I have read many scary stories of Opus Dei. Does anyone have an Opus Dei priest as your spiritual director or advisor? Has he “whistled” to you to join the numeraries?

I’ve talked to Opus Dei priests first spiritual direction. They probably won’t be telling you to become a numerary. They probably won’t even bring up a possible vocation unless you bring up interest. Most really care about people’s spiritual well being and just want to help you grow in holiness.

In my experience, they make excellent spiritual directors. Highly recommended.

[For the record, I’m not a member of Opus Dei in any capacity.]

Orthodox, insightful, reliable and committed. It’s possible that the two confessors I had just so happened to be extraordinary priests, but their association with Opus Dei probably had something to do with it. One of whom I still keep in contact with and consider a friend. I’ve been somewhat itinerant and moved around a lot, so have had several different spiritual directors since my conversion. Are you going to an Opus Dei center? There are often excellent talks available.

Thank you for your insightful explanation! I wish I can go to an opus dei centre, but it’s pretty inaccessible for wheelchairs. (Yeah, I move around on wheelchair)
