A better example might bulimia, the act of enjoying food & then ejecting it before completing digestion. Of course, the fact that bulimics are by definition mentally/emotionally unbalanced bears upon their moral guilt.

How about using “unfoods”? Science has brought us fat and oil substitutes that cannot be digested by the human body, deliberately frustrating the body’s natural functions.
Good observation!
Obviously the two hours spent on the toilet due to eating such fake/substitutes these fats is not nearly as much fun as one can have while wearing the condom.
😃

St. Augustine had a lot to do with shaping the Catholic Church’s teachings on sexuality. And while he had a lot of hang-ups about sex, he didn’t have any problems with bubble gum.

I know this is a joke but…

Condoms prevent conception. Chewing gum does not prevent nourishment.

🤷
Condoms allow a person to enjoy the pleasure of sex while avoiding the consequences, i.e., getting pregnant. Chewing gum allows a person to enjoy the pleasure of chewing while avoiding the consequences, i.e., weight gain.

Those hang-ups have had a ripple effect for centuries.

You talk like it’s an “either/or” thing!

OK, I seriously apologize for that comment.

Condoms are forbidden because their use separates the sex act from it’s intended purpose and are said to be in violation of the Natural Law. Why isn’t bubble gum banned for the same reason? This is not a laughing matter!

The enjoyment derived from eating encourages us to nourish the body and sustains life. Without the eating act, human life would cease to exist so this is not a trivial issue. If ever there was grave matter, this is it. Human existence depends entirely on the sex act and the eating act.

To engage in the eating act outside of it’s intended purpose is also a violation of the Natural Law. Can someone explain why chewing bubble gum is not a mortal sin?

:o
The problem you have here is that the Church does not teach what you claim about eating and the natural moral law.

She does teach that the gift of fertility:
The Church, nevertheless, in urging men to the observance of the precepts of the natural law, which it interprets by its constant doctrine, teaches that each and every marital act must of necessity retain its intrinsic relationship to the procreation of human life. (12)

So what? Natural Family Planning prevents conception too.
Without the “eating act” there will be no “marital act”. Bubble gum separated
the “eating act” from it’s intended purpose according to Natural Law. There is nothing
funny about this!
Actually, no. NFP is information. Not having sex (ie abstaining) prevents conception–works every time.

This is a silly comparison. Chewing gum doesn’t prevent you from eating and NFP doesn’t prevent you from having sex. Contraception, however, lets you have sex anytime of the fertility cycle without the consequences of conception. Contraception alters the act. NFP keeps the act intact. I’m truly sorry you are having trouble seeing the difference. Maybe take a break from the topic. Pray on it. Meditate on it. Do some serious reading about it. Pray some more…

Is that how you use a condom?

Actually if one wants to blow large bubbles, a condom results in a much bigger bubble and it doesn’t stick to ones face when it bursts. Condoms used in this manner seldom fail by bursting. :D:D
