Steve,

That is NOT an offical teaching of the Catholic Church. Those bishops are acting against the teachings of the Church.

I’m realatively new to Catholicism, so I might be thinking incorrectly, but does this seem right?

The whole story sounds fishy. First, look who they have endorsing this “change”:

*[The change in view was welcomed by the *Spanish Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals]

and, such a radical shift against Church policy in 2 months?:

[The leading daily El Pais pointed out that as recently as November the Spanish Bishops Conference had vehemently opposed the Health Ministry’s campaign to promote the use of condoms.]

If anything, if true, this will give the Church the opportunity to again reaffirm to the world stage the reasons why ABC is illicit and harmful to the fabric of society–a blessing in disguise.

The priest was very misquoted

Curt Jester has more info.

From his site
It appears that Father Juan Antonio Martínez Camino was attempting to explain that it was nice that an international program accepted the Church´s stance with respect to Abstinence. However, by mentioning the Lancet ABC program, the press miscontrued that to mean the Church was supporting the use of condoms. In other words, they ignored the parts “A” and “B” of the program, and misconstued the Father´s words that he was approving of the “C” part of the program.

so, NEVER RELY on the press releases, especially CNN and FOXENWS.

Pio

Do not wory about it. I am spanish. I know what is going on. The press was twisting a sentence of one of the bishops after he met with our minister for health.

The day after, the “spanish bishop conference” (Conferencia episcopal espan~ola) corrected the information:
The church did not say the use of condoms is allowed and they are preparing a “text” to clarify the whole point.
Regards,
Jose

if condoms were allowed and I were pope, I would set up an inquisition.

Well at least not much has changed.

At first when i found out about this I was going nuts. But now that I have thought about it…I understand their position. What are married couples supposed to do if on of them has aids?isnt it wrong to instinctly infect someone with a disease I’m trust trying to understand a little bit as to what this guy is thinking! someone with some insight please help!

When the dust settles and we know more about this news from Spain, I suppose that the new Spanish decision is much less extreme than reported. I haven’t yet seen anything very detailed.

I suppose that they are permitting an (HIV-positive person or a person with AIDS) to use a condom when having sex with their spouse who is has not yet been exposed to AIDS.

It is my understanding that similar situations have been reviewed by Rabbis on a case-by-case basis in Judaism. See jewfaq.org/sex.htm and note that in such cases (if any exist) “preserving the life of the uninfected spouse” is the priority.

I doubt that condoms are OK in Spain (in any usual context).

In this case complete Abstinence would be the prudent path. Contraception/condoms would NOT be morally licit. As others have pointed out, the Spanish bishop was misquoted.

The press is always trying to find ways to twist and discredit the Catholic Church. Ignore them. Any time you hear or read where the Catholic Church has changed a teaching, you can just change the channel because it is NOT possible to change the Deposit of Faith. This is not the same as changing a discipline (like abstinence from meat on Friday) because disciplines are not a part of the Deposit of Faith. It’s up to the Catholic faithful to be educated and know the difference.

The teaching is, as it always has been and always will be, that contraception for any reason is intrinsically evil-- meaning there cannot be a reason to use it even if the desire is a good end, contraception is always a bad means.
