Confessing mortal sins/invalid confessions

In the case that one knowingly leaves out a mortal sin during confession, are other confessed mortal sins during that confession forgiven or is the whole confession invalid? In other words, would every mortal sin have to be re-confessed if someone intentionally didn’t confess one mortal sin or would only that particular mortal sin need to be confessed?

If you confess all Mortal Sins and knowingly leave out a Mortal Sin none of your sins are forgiven and you commit the grave sin of sacrilige.

Basically – yes if say I commit murder and go to confession and I confess other mortal sins and intentionally hide the murder…well I would need to confess all the mortal sins again. And the one hidden…and the hiding.

Such is a different matter if I forget it but intended to confess all my mortal sins and had contrition etc (and there could be some other possible potential reasons to omit a particular mortal sin…but the norm is one is not to omit such).

(also note that those out there who are scrupulous or struggle with scruples --they can be in a different boat…they ought to discuss things with their regular confessor…for some can have all sorts of unfounded fears).

I think this might be the case for me. I mentioned the situation I was worried about in confession as I remembered it (passing over something about which I wasn’t certain whether it was mortal or venial and presumably forgetting to mention it at the end of my confession) but the priest didn’t comment on it so I assumed it wasn’t anything to worry about. I’ve had scruples for a while and for the past little while it’s been about discerning what is worthy of worrying about and what should just be left in the past.

It is important for then to have a regular confessor…and discuss such with him.

Not sure if I’ve read this correctly, but it sounds like you are saying that you have already confessed the matter mentioned in your OP. If that is the case then you have been absolved of it, and all other sins, and are in a state of grace. It doesn’t matter whether you confessed it as “sacrilege”, or just told the priest what you did, “as [you] remembered it”. You may still need to confess any unconfessed mortal sins, but that is a different matter. Just mention it all in your next confession.

Or if one does not yet have such…discuss with either that Priest you confessed to in confession…or another. (for now)
