I am aware that when confessing mortal sins we must mention the specific species and the number of times we committed the sin as well as any circumstances that might increase or mitigate the gravity. I’m wondering if we must mention also the evil thoughts that occurred within our mind before the commission of the sin that could increase the malice or just the sin itself? For instance, say I committed adultery and my sole reason for doing such was because I was angry with my spouse and wanted to hurt him/her and not because I was the least bit attracted to the person I sinned with.

I would say that, yes, it would be necessary to explain that. In the example you give, that would seem to increase the gravity of the sin, and would, in my mind make that example to be two potentially grave sins, not just one.

I agree with this post. I think it’s important to confess anger too as you don’t want such a sin to happen again if possible with God’s Mercy he bestows to all of us including myself.

Think about it like this. Does the fact that confessing that much makes you feel bad, or makes it more ankward to actually do it in front of a priest? Then counter that feeling of ankwardness and just do it, and you’ll feel much better, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will have much more effect on changing your soul for good once you repent in front of a representative of Christ, and the repeat of that sin will become much more unlikely than if you just confess it more vaguely. Trust me, it worked with me! 👍
