Is there a difference between blasphemy and simply taking the Lord’s name in vain? Usually in confession, I just say “I have taken the Lord’s name in vain X times.” But I’m now wondering if this is sufficient.

For instance exclaiming “Jesus Christ” vs. “Jesus bleeping Christ”. Do these constitute the same type of sin? I mean one certainly sounds worse, but does it matter in terms of how you confess it?

And what about saying “gddamn" or "God dmn it”? I heard someone say that saying GD is more than simply taking the Lord’s name in vain, because you are actually asking God to damn someone/something. So how should you confess that?

Also, how about if someone were to say, “scr*w God,” etc. How would that would be confessed.

Just say “I took the Lord’s name in vain X times.” Trust that God knows what you did and why, and the priest knows what you mean, and will ask for more details if necessary. Keeping it brief is the best policy with regards to confession since it keeps us from over explaining things and starting to justify them. It’s the humblest way to go about it.

YES there is. To Blaspheme as the NORM requires a INTENT to call God and God’s Name into profane judgment.

FROM FR HARDON’S CATHOLIC DICTIONARY

BLASPHEMY. Speaking against God in a contemptuous, scornful, or abusive manner. Included under blasphemy are offenses committed by thought, word, or action. Serious contemptuous ridicule of the saints, sacred objects, or of persons consecrated to God is also blasphemous because God is indirectly attacked. Blasphemy is a grave violation of charity toward God. Its gravity may be judged by the capital punishment in the Old Testament, severe penalties of the Church, and in many cases also of the State for blasphemous speech or conduct. In order for a person to sin gravely in this manner, he must use blasphemous expressions and realize the contemptuous meaning of what he says or does. (Etym. Latin blasphemia, blasphemy; from Greek blasphēmein, to speak ill of.)"

As you sate it; it is questionable that ALL 3 CONDITIONS actually exist

Grave matter]
Pre-Knowledge that do this act will be a MORTAL sin [premeditated to BE a Mortal sin]
Freely desiring to do it anyway

IF IT DOUBT discuss the issue with your Confessor

ONLY if BY specific INTENT this premeditated. NOT just spontaneous anger

BUT vulgarity is always sinful and MUST be overcome with personal charity 👍

Pray for help to overcome this BAD habit

Blessings,

Patrick
