Hi all, I wonder if anyone can help - I’m a bit scrupulous at times so please take that into consideration.

So…I struggle with intrusive thoughts, and I recently spoke with my Priest for spiritual direction and I raised an uncertainty I had, the uncertainty was “If I had an intrusive thought about a sin which happened prior to Baptism and I’m not sure if I dwelt on that thought intentionally, should I mention what the pre-baptismal sin was when confessing the thought? or should I just confess that I had an intrusive thought about a past sin (no details as to what it was) and mention that I’m not sure if I intentionally dwelt on it?”

My Priest said I did not need to confess the past sin which the thought was about since it happened before my Baptism and thus has been forgiven, and that I only need to confess that I had an intrusive thought about a past sin and that I’m not sure if I intentionally dwelt on the thought. At the time I heard his advice I believed it was good advice but now that I am preparing my Confession I am wondering if I go with the advice and don’t mention what the past sin was then I might be intentionally withholding the sin? I’m really unsure what to do…

You need to trust your Priest and follow his guidance. Always, always listen to him over any advice you may receive here, or anywhere else.

You struggle with scruples, and we at CAF can’t help you with those. That’s what your Priest is for. Listen to him.

Thank you for your advice, I don’t know if i struggle with scruples or just have a tendency to be scrupulous…
