Confession and repentance

Hi,

Here’s my situation:
I committed a grave sin. That sin made me tell a lie (just great, another sin). I confessed both committing the grave sin and the lying, because I repented both of those sins. My problem is with the lying: I absolutely don’t want to tell a lie again, but if I was in the same situation that made me lie, I don’t know if I would or not lie again. Does this mean I didn’t really repent? And does that make the confession invalid?
 
I don’t think that it makes your confession invalid. People have certain sins (or types of sins) that they have to “fight against” their whole lives. Perhaps yours is being truthful in situations. Perhaps it is not about the LIE in and of itself, but about the deeper issue. What are you trying to accomplish by the lie? That could lead you know what the “true” sin is… pride, envy, greed, etc. Then that may be something to talk to your confessor about. “My sins are those of PRIDE or ENVY or whatever.” Then you can work toward making changes that will help you fight against that sin in the future.

No - It just means you cannot foretell the furture…😉

All it really means is that you recognize your weakness. It is an area that you need to work on.

Another question within this problem is: if I lied, do I now have to tell the truth to the person I lied to, even if it was a looong time ago and the lie itself made no harm to that person at all?

I would say no, you don’t have to tell the person. Especially if there was no harm done… by telling them about the lie, then that would just hurt them. Your sin is between you and GOD now. And say some prayers for the person that was involved. 🙂
