Hi, I’ve been getting into some bad habits and I really want to go to confession, but of course no churches are open during quarantine. How can I make a truly good confession at home? one where I can truly feel sorry for my sins, as well as determination to do better?

You can do an Examination of Conscience and make an act of perfect contrition, but you can’t go to confession without a priest. Or is a priest coming to your house to hear your confession?

I suggest looking at detailed pictures of our Lords’ Passion, then imagining being there and actually seeing Him up close in all His agony and suffering - that should instill genuine sorrow for sins as well as a determination to not sin again. After all, it was for your sins (and mine and everyone elses’ sins too - though He would have endured exactly the same just for you if you were the only sinner ever) that Jesus suffered so - to save you (and me, and all mankind).

I would suggest that you make an examination of conscience followed by an act of perfect contrition with the commitment to go to confession at the first opportunity.

In addition to some of the above advice, I’ve always found Psalm 51 helpful for times like these.

And picture yourself inflicting those injuries on Him, which is what your sins have done.

That may be helpful to some, but not to those who suffer from scrupulosity. But still I get the point you are making.

Just for the benefit of everyone reading, some dioceses are allowing confession even if there are no public masses.

So if you are not sure, please call a priest.

Or, contact your parish…our priests are hearing confession In the parish gardens by appointment, with both confessor and repentant wearing masks.

Have you made any attempt to go to confession? Have you called the parish and tried to get a priest to hear your confession?
