Hello all, I have a quick question. Am I allowed a valid confession before being confirmed? Btw, I’m still a Catechumen because I am a convert/converting.

Thanks!

God Bless

Are you an elect or candidate? Baptised or not? Elect dont need confession because of baptism, but candidates do because they have already been baptised long before. As a catechumen and it being lent I assume you are familiar with all that I’m saying.

Ya I am a canidate, I have been baptised, and I heard about an obligation of going to confession during lent, I just want to make sure this** is allowed for me before **confirmation, as I had heard it infered otherwise (kinda like the Eucharist, which of course I know I’m not to take).

It’s not just allowed, it’s required for those previously baptized to confess before receiving the Eucharist & Confirmation. Your RCIA instructor should be setting up a First Reconciliation for all candidates. If they do not, make an appointment with the priest.

From what I know and have heard candidates are to have confession before confirmation, but like you said not the Eucharist.

OK cool thanks I’ll be sure to confess. I’ll need to work up my courage though. I think my RCIA director might be setting one up soon. Thanks again

a baptized person must confess all grave sins of your past life, and is encouraged to confess all sins, mortal or venial, before receiving Confirmation and First Communion. You should be prepared for your examination of conscience and form for confession during your class, or perhaps at a communal penance service arranged for you and your classmates. If they don’t do it for you, search on confession or examination of conscience in the liturgy and sacraments forum for assistance on doing this.

Sympathy. I am a 62 year old RCIA Candidate. Baptised 1944, so had 55 years of sin to unload. I did face-to face with a Priest last 14 February. It was not so much courage as TRUST I needed to summon up, to trust both the sacrament and the power of the Seal Of Confession.

After all the vile stuff was confessed, the Priest smiled as he gave me the absolution.

On 4 April I will make another, shorter confession to cover what I did from 14 February to 4 April. Sins of the tongue, mostly.

Go for it.👍

We were told a couple of weeks ago (by our church’s admin lady)that the Church in Canada does not require confession before confirmation for Candidates. We were flabbergasted, and are booking our confessions anyway. I can’t think of a single doctrinal anything that would allow a previously baptised person who has committed grave sin to take communion without confession.

I would demand to see this in writing. They have the same canon law as the rest of the Church.

In my diocese - Calgary, AB Canada, you still need to go to confession before Confirmation.

I would double check with the Pastoral Center for your diocese.

Good Luck

Tak

Not to hijack, but I am also a candidate (the Bishop has decided to bring candidates in May 20, catechumen on Easter)…can I go? I was told I had to wait   I really want to go to confession.

I don’t see any reason that you should have to wait, since you are already baptized, have received instruction, and have the desire to confess now. Find a good priest whom you trust, make an appointment, and go for it! Here’s a “how-to” in case your RCIA catechists haven’t provided any guidance:
