Hi,

My nana married once to my grandfather. He was abusive, and my Nana divorced him. Then she remarried. Both her husbands are no longer alive. Does she have to go to confesion?

Thank you,
Joshua

This is not enough information to say yes or not. You must also realize that maybe she already confessed her sin, assuming that she was in an irregular marital situation.

Neither marriage was in the Church or any church for that matter. They were both done by a court justice. I guess this is called a common law marriage. I don’t know if these are sacramental marriages at all. My nana was raised Catholic, but her first husband was very anti-Catholic. She raised all of her kids to be Catholic though.

no way to know. we do not know anything about the soul of another person. Yes she should have confessed at the time she was living with the second husband, but that is really none of our business. It is enough that she knows when she needs confession now. Did she ask you this question? She is not living in any improper manner now, but if she still has worries about that old problem she can certainly visit the priest in confession and tell him about it, and have the secure knowledge she has been forgiven.

As a Catholic she was bound to follow the laws of the Church and she did not. Your Nana would need to confess both marriages since neither one was a valid sacramental marriage.

Perhaps she has already done this? She might have done, but not told you or anyone else because that is not anyone else’s business.

She would have to confess regarding both marriages, but we simply don’t know if she has done so.

Since both spouses are no longer alive, she is free to marry (after confession, of course).

The confession is not necessary for the sacrament of matrimony; however receiving a sacrament in a state of mortal sin will not allow for the reception of all the graces that would come from the sacrament. If a person gets married in a state of mortal sin the marriage is still valid.
