Confession: How often?

I go once per month, unless mortal sin has been commited. I have scrupulous tendencies, and I think going more often would feed those tendencies.

I have a question for those responding: Do you tend to confess to the same priest regularly or do you just go to whomever is hearing confessions that day (or week in my parish)?

The last 3 times or so I have been to the same priest (keep in mind - I was on the once a year plan). I like him - he is gentle and kind, but I don’t get much advice or feedback. He is leaving next month for another parish. I will try with our new pastor, and then decide which one I am going to make the drive to our current pastor’s new parish, stick with our new pastor, or look for someone else altogether.

I usually went to the associate priest at my parish, but he is leaving for another assignment. I will probably try the new associate priest who will be starting to see how he is. I also like the retired priest in residence, so I will go to him if I do not care for the new associate priest as a confessor. I do not care for my pastor as a confessor.

In our parish ( St. Athanasius Orthodox Church) We have two priests who hear confession every Saturday after Great Vespers. Many people confess every week. While confessions are heard, the Psalms are chanted by at least two or three people, I think by one Reader, and two Lay persons.
Confession in the Eastern Orthodox Church is very beautiful. It would be best to confess to the same priest. We are taught to seek out a Spiritual Father, and to make it a habit to confess only to him.
This is because we gain a relationship with our confessor, and he can guide us in our spiritual journey. We always confess face to face, I guess so the priest can know how to apply the medicine of penance to individual penitents.

Since being received into the Church this Easter I’ve been going weekly. To date, this has been because of my weak nature in saying “no” to sin and its temptations. So hopefully, after I’ve really learned how to use God’s grace, I can make once a month a goal for Confession. Please, pray for me in the meantime though, I need all the help I can get!

I prefer face-to-face confession also. There is a Byzantine Catholic cathedral close to where I live. I may confess there some day. I have seen some information about the Eastern confession. It sounds like it would be a wonderful experience of Grace in the sacrament.
