Confession in regards to Mass

When one has committed a mortal sin, presumably, it is best to go to Confession as soon as one can.

But is one under any obligation to do so? In other words, must I make an effort to go to Confession “soon” rather than wait for “the next time that I can get to the scheduled Confession” or something similar…

I’m scrupulous so the question entered my head. I would presume that me are probably **not **obligated to get to Confession “ASAP” but I just wanted to have some answers, again not on what is “better” but what is obligatory…

Ask God for forgiveness and go to confession when you can.

When you are guilty of a mortal sin it is best to go to confession as soon as possible because you never know when your life is going to end. You do not want to die without having made a good confession if you have mortal sins on your soul.

Confession is such a grace for us to have. I wish that priests would talk about it more often in their homilies. I wish priests would offer the occasion of confession on a more regular basis than the one or two hours we see at the typical parish.

For example study Padre Pio who was known to spend many, many hours in the confessional. Why did he do that? What might he say about the time allotted to confession at today’s typical parish? Well of course we cannot know the answer but we can discern his answer through his example.
 
OP, I’m a bit confused about what you want from people on this thread. Your first post said you didn’t want what people thought was better, but what is obligatory. Your next post says “should I make a special appointment…”

Do you want the facts on MUST or do you want peoples’ opinions on SHOULD?

You are only required to go to confession once per year, if you have committed a mortal sin.

Here are my thoughts on “should.” When I commit a mortal sin, I have separated myself from union with God. I have rejected His love. I have told Him that my sin is more important to me than is my relationship with Him. I have told Him that I don’t want to obey His laws and that I reject what He knows is best for me. I have separated myself from His grace.

If you believe that committing a mortal sin does that, how could you want to stay in that state for one minute longer than necessary? If you love God, you will want to repair the wound that you have inflicted on your soul as soon as humanly possible. If that doesn’t motivate you, think about eternity. If you die in that state, God will respect your decision to separate yourself from Him for eternity.

Get to confession as soon as possible, if not sooner. 😃

I don’t even remember now what it was that I thought was mortal… I’m fighting with scrupulosity and did something that I decided was mortal sin (before not receiving last week). I remember debating about whether it was a mortal sin or not, and I think I decided on it being so - even though I can’t remember what it is now and even though maybe it wasn’t.

I understand the logic behind “get to confession ASAP” but in dealing with scrupulosity, I’m dealing with, “do I absolutely have to do it this second?” (going crazy in the other direction).

So, I do understand that I should get to confession soon (if I committed a mortal sin).

I have been trying to get in each week for the scheduled confession, but I work through that hour and have been late… So I’m wondering if I have to try to make a special appointment to confess (which I may do anyhow - my scrupulosity is pretty bad and I know I need
help), or if I have the option of waiting to the next time I can get there (maybe about 2 weeks from now).

Being scrupulous, it’s comforting in a way to not “have to” go to confession this very second, even though it would definitely be a good thing…

I hope that explains my situation a little bit better…

For me, it would be time to time. Confession every so often. The Church puts a limit to once a year. But it depends. Look: there are places on Earth where to find a priest you have got to walk one week by foot, like in some parts of Africa or the Amazon or the Center of Asia.

Now, every time one feels that something wrong happened we would go to confession, there would not be enough priests to only do that if the Bible is right when says that the Righteous sins 7 times a day.

Pray for forgiveness every night before going to bed, see what you have done wrong and what you can be better next day, and when you have your time set, go to confession. The idea that you make a mortal sin and you are in hell, I was raised to that idea, and it is horrible and makes you suffer a lot but it is a relic of pre-Vatican II times, where the natural way was to be in mortal sin and go to hell, the un-natural thing was to be in God’s grace and have God’s forgiveness.

I do not say to follow my advice, it is just the way I think.

I work during the confession times at the parish I’m attending while at my mother’s. I really wanted to go though (I’d been putting it off for a few weeks) so all I did was after mass I went to the priest and explained that I work during the confession times and if he could hear my confession then, which he did.
