As a catholic I understand that where we go is determined by the state of our soul at our time of death. However who goes to Purgatory is not clear to me. My understanding from watching discussions on EWTN and Father Corapi talks is that if a person does NOT commit a sin between baptism or confession and their death (ie they are not in a state of mortal sin at death) then they go straight to heaven but at time of death if a person is in a state of mortal sin they go straight to hell.
Who then goes to Purgatory? Is it people who only have venial sins at time of death?

Yes it is people with veniel sins but also people with forgiven mortal sins that have not been completely made up for ie. You break your neighbors window …you go to them and ask for forgivness and it is granted …but you still have to pay for the replacement of the broken window… Thats what Purgatory is! Hope this makes sense!

The bible is clear that nothing unclean will ever come before God. Our sins carry a temporal punishment. JP11 had some great insight on Purgatory. He said that it is not a place but a spiritual state of being in which we are cleansed. Our brothers and sisters in other Christian faiths are turned off by the term Purgatory, but you can point out to them places in the bible that mention cleansing. Catholic Answers has free info on this site.

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.
