I do try to go to confession regularly, but Advent is getting away from me. I know the church says that we must go to confession during lent. Are we required to go to confession during Advent as well?

You are only required to go to confession if you are conscious of mortal sin. (see Canon Law 989), so no, you do not have to go in Lent or Advent or any time, unless that is the case.

Having said that, confessing venial sins is a good practice and highly recommended.

Thank you…I try to do my best and I want to make sure that I don’t break any rules

No requirement, but a shame to let a season of penance, such as Lent or Advent, to go by without receiving the Sacrament.

We are not required to go to confession during Lent, only to confess at least once a year if conscious of mortal sin. I suspect this is mainly so that we can fulfill our “Easter Duty.”

Canon 989: After having reached the age of discretion, each member of the faithful is obliged to confess faithfully his or her grave sins at least once a year.

Canon 920 §1. After being initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, each of the faithful is obliged to receive holy communion at least once a year.
§2. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at another time during the year.
