Confession Situation

Howdy,
This morning I went to a different parish for confession at 8:00am since I might not make it to my home parish confession time. I arrived early and was next in line when the priest comes out, apologizes, and says he has to prepare for Mass. I understand the situation but I was extremely disappointed. I plan on finding a different confession time but I was wondering where I stand. Although I did not make a confession I still went with full intention of doing so. Am I exonerated?

This question, in many variants, has been asked several times. The short answer is that you cannot be absolved if you have not confessed. Please find another opportunity to confess so you can receive absolution.

Am I exonerated?

In all these years I have never heard that one in relation to Confession, but, I will use it when I teach from now on

If you are aware of grave sins, refrain from Communion until you can make Confession. Perhaps make an appointment, or, most places have Confession sometime Saturday.

Advice from a parish staffer, if Confession is from 2 pm - 3:30 PM, arrive at 1:55 PM.

Advice from a former head sacristan: arrive at least half an hour in advance.

Even that might not be enough. I once arrived an hour before confessions began and there were already 26 people in line. (Full disclosure: cathedral of a large city)

A few years ago I attempted to go to confession five (!) times, at multiple churches, before “succeeding”. I came fairly early each time. Anyway, after an honest but failed attempt at going to confession, I wouldn’t worry too much about the state of your soul. Go again when you can, but don’t lose sleep over it.

Timing in life is everything. The good news is that there are confessions heard all the time. If not, then make an appointment with the priest.
