I typically run thru the 10 commandments as an aide to making a proper confession. It usually also helps me stay focused and not ramble during a confession. It really helps me summarize.

I do an examination of conscience beforehand but this helps me to confess ALL of my sins, especially honoring my mom/father/spouse. It also gets me thru the shame of yet again having to confess lust, sloth, presumption, and destructive habits. I definitely am the younger brother of the prodigal son.

I am periodically able to have devotional confessions; confessions where I have no mortal sins to my knowledge to confess. I try to go to confessions bi-weekly to monthly so that I am not in the place of needing to confess mortal sins or sins that can separate me from God if I were to be unrepentant in them.

Even if you run through the Ten Commandments, there are a myriad ways to violate them, some of which we wouldn’t think of.

If one “didn’t think of” it then one didn’t sin because one didn’t realize it was a sin when one was doing it.

Once you know it’s a sin, then you should be aware of it going forward and not do it.

I also don’t believe that there are that many ways to sin that we wouldn’t think of. Sins are often simply common sense.

Good point. If we’re ignorant, then we’re not responsible. But just for theological discussion, consider Job. It was said that Job didn’t know enough about God. Then, the next thing we know of that happened is that the Earth was empty and void. So, the more we know about God the less darkness there is in ourselves and in the world.
