Hey everyone. So I went to Confession tonight, and for the absolution the priest says the whole prayer, but at the end he says: “…and I forgive all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Is that valid?

The priest acts in Persona Christi, so it is really Jesus saying that instead of the priest himself.

Yes I know that. However I am greatly troubled over the change of formula. Is my Confession valid?

It most certainly is valid. Jesus gave authority to the Apostles ."Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven ". The Apostles were the first Bishops . The Bishops are successors of the Apostles . The Bishops instruct the priests. You may read in the New testament about presbyters . These were the first priests who worked closely with the Apostles(Bishops) I hope I was helpful

Hello Jacob21,

I would say that the absolution was valid since the essential meaning of the words used by the priest is the same as those of the approved formula.
