I know of a person who waited much too long to go to confession. He is now trying to gather courage after not having gone to confession for 38 years. So no, you’re not odd.
A few suggestions:
You are going to meet Jesus, tell Him what you did, and have Him absolve you. The priest ACTS for Jesus. So, you’re not going to see Father So-And-So exactly, but to encounter Jesus. Keep telling yourself that.
If you live in an area where there is more than one parish, or can drive or take public transportation to another parish, try going where nobody knows you. It’s a lot easier.
(If you live in Chicago, take yourself downtown to St. Peter’s in the Loop. 11 1/2 hours of confession on weekdays, and choices of face-to-face or the booth.)
If you have a particular priest who has been helpful in your life, give him a call and set up an appointment for confession. Sometimes, that’s easier than waiting until Saturday afternoon and hopping in the booth or what have you at your home parish. It might take two or three tries to call, just as it might take two or three tries to ask a girl out.
Some people like to go during a penance service. They like the fact that the priests are trying to move through a lot of people and not interested in anything “deep”. Me, I prefer to go once a week, and not be afraid of it any more.
If you have a good friend who is also Catholic, see if that person will accompany you. Of course, your friend can’t go in with you, but the moral support is great. I’ve had to do this once or twice in my life.
You might have a few false starts; you know, going out the door, getting as far as the vestibule, and you just can’t get through the door. That’s OK. Keep trying. Give it another shot. Ask the Holy Spirit and the Blessed Mother to help you out.
I hope this helps you out.
