Hello everyone, had a quick question on the Sacrament of Confession. So, it’s been about 10-12 years since my last confession, and I’m writing a list down. I understand you have to name the number of times you’ve committed the sin. However, I’ve committed the same sins several times. Is it alright to say my sin, followed by “several times”?

Thank you

We are to confess our sins “in number and kind.” We can estimate or give or give our best guess as to the number of times.

I would think that would be just fine.

When you start off by telling your priest that you haven’t been to confession in 10-12 years, he will understand that you are going to have to approximate your mortal sins. Just make sure you examine your conscience thoroughly and do not omit any mortal sins.

Since it has been a long time since your last confession, you will not know the exact number of times you committed a mortal sin. You can use “constantly”, “often”, “a few times” or “several times” when referring to a particular sin.

God knows you are doing the best you can and that is what matters.

I was in a similar situation when I returned to the Church and it had been years since my last confession. I took my list of sins with me to the confessional because it was so long.

I always say at the end of my confession, “For these sins and any sins I may have forgotten, I am truly sorry”. And if you happen to remember a mortal sin afterwards, just mention it at your next confession.

Like I said, I was in a similar situation when I returned to the Church and it felt so good to go to confession. It literally felt like a huge weight had been lifted off of my shoulders.

Like the other said, number and kind. Approximate what you can’t remember. Hold nothing back.

Redemption and mercy! Congratulations!

I just did after about 10 years myself and I forgot a lot of things but I told the priest that and of course confessed the major sins that I know I needed to confess … he was so understanding and said it was ok if I forgot being I was so nervous. good for you it feels so good after !
