I recently just started going to church after over 35 years of living a sinful life. I am 53 years old; I was baptized and I made my first communion.

Today I went to confession and I had a long list. It felt good to get that all off my chest.

I am going to church every week. How often are we supposed to go to confession?

A good rule of thumb is once a month, but the technical requirement is once a year.

I once asked my spiritual director that question and his answer was that I should go as often as is helpful to me. In the end I think that may be as precise an answer as he could give.

Think about the rhythms in your spiritual life and figure out where confession fits in. There are things like prayer that you do daily or multiple times a day. You go to Mass weekly or more. You may see a spiritual director monthly or go on an annual retreat. All these things renew and refresh you and deepen your relationship with God. Where does confession fit into this.

That’s a question for your own regular confessor.

Largely, the answer depends upon the issues you are dealing with in the sacrament and where you are in your particular spiritual and sacramental life.

You are obligated to go at least once during the Easter season.

With that said, I personally try to go at least once a month which was suggested by one of our Deacons who acts unofficially as my spiritual advisor. You really should find a spiritual advisor who can help you discern if how frequently you may need to go to confession depending on what it is you are dealing with in your life.

( I keep a weekly Holy Hour and usually pray the LOTH Evening and Night-Prayers and there is a plenary indulgence under the normal form for this act, so I try to go during the middle of the month and I offer that indulgence up for those in purgatory that have no-one left to remember them by name )

Congratulations on coming back the angels rejoice for you, the first confession can be the hardest and yet the most grace giving from our lord, because he goes after the lost sheep.

Stay close with the rest of us the pack, god knows it can be hard at first so all I can suggest is if y0ur conscience tells you go regardless of lapsed time.

And try and sin no more.

God’s grace can lead us from temptation I hope this helps.
