Hello I have returned to my faith as a RC after a number of yrs and I do not like to confess to the fact I have forgotten a lot of what I originally learned. Is this a place I can ask questions on these matters?
The first is how often do I need to go to confession?
Thank-you

Congratulations, welcome home! :dancing: :dancing:

The minimum requirement is to go to confession at least once a year during the Lent/Easter season (ie round about now). If you commit a mortal sin you should go as soon as possible afterwards.

Angels,

This is definitely the place.

Ask as many questions as you want. 🙂

Welcome to the forums! Much to discuss here. Ask anything you want. As LilyM said, you must go to confession at least once a year, I think. Then, of course if you have comitted a mortal sin, go to confession ASAP.

This place is quite addicting, just to warn you.

You must confess your mortal sins at least once a year. My understanding is that you are not required to go to confession if you are not in a state of mortal sin. Having said that we all should go frequently even if our sins are only venial.

A surprising number of Catholics don’t realize that taking Communion while in a state of mortal sin is another mortal sin. That’s why you received the advice to go to confession immediately if that happens, even though the Church says once a year.

Also, since you left the Church as a practicing Catholic for a while, you should go to confession as soon as possible if you haven’t already, as at a minimum you missed the Sunday obligation to attend Mass.

Good luck, welcome here and welcome back!

Blessings!

I also returned to our church after a lengthy stay. My “plate” going into confession was more than filled…I went into the confessional using the verbage that I was taught many years ago…the priest - was very considerate, and assisted me in my confession.

but I want you to know this…

I have never-ever felt the closeness of Jesus, as I did -after, I made that confession…

It was Amazing…HE Loves us so much!

Go and confess, and the rest (how often and the proper time) will all fall into place for you.

His Beautiful Peace,
TunaBill

AngelsForever. My advice would be to just go. Concentrate on what you want to ask for fogiveness for, the priest will aid you with the rest.

I went to confession after a 30+ year absence. The priest told me (in essence) that my returning to the church and my confession made his day. And this was after he heard my confession  .

Another priest said the angels in heaven where throwing a party! My experiences with priests, since coming back to the Catholic church has been nothing short of wonderful. The vast majority of these men are a gift from above.

Angels…Welcome Home! Yep you’re in the right place! Go to confession as often as you like, one a year on the outside…but for your first confession back I would recommend making an appointment with your pastor and have him walk you through your first time back.
