I was going to go to confession until I encountered yahoo answers page where it said that no one is able to forgive your sins except god, and that means priests cannot cleanse your sins through god.

They were (christians btw) anyways, they also said that there is no medium between man and god except Jesus. If that is so, is confession true or does it even work? I’m not sure anymore 😦

It is God who “cleanses” our sins through the priest.

MerciOfC, it looks like you’re as new at this as I am (I went to confession a few weeks ago, the first time since 1988). I suggest going here: catholic.com/library/Forgiveness_of_Sins.asp

Then pop back over to the forum for any follow up questions. Whatever you do, don’t get your answers from yahoo.com!

Christ did not promise to send the Holy Spirit to protect the teaching and practice of the yahoo answer page from error, he made this promise to the Catholic Church which he founded. God does forgive sins, Christ did this in fact for that reason, to prove He was indeed God. He himself gave that authority to the priesthood, through the apostles whom he himself commissioned to forgive sins. I have no idea where the “Christians” who contributed to your website got their interpretation. CAtholics get theirs from the Bible, as in John 20:19-23 when Christ appeared to the apostles on the evening of the Resurrection, breathed on them, said receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you shall forgive are forgiven, whose sins you shall retain are retained. this and the other numerous passages detailing precisely how Christ chose, formed and commissioned the apostles and instituted the priesthood. The priest, according to Christ, stands in the person of Christ himself, and it is Christ who forgives sins in the sacrament of penance and reconciliation.

Before making any decision about quitting with the sacrament of reconciliation, I would listen more to my priest and refer to books with the nihil obstat and imprimatur, than some internet forum. That holds true even for this outstanding forum where a lot of people have an extremely deep understanding of the Chruch teachings and hers disciplines. A lot of people post their honest opinions and understanding and some might be wrong. I really like the habit of several contributors who post clear references to specific statements.

Especially in this information age, there are numerous different opinions and information out there. You cannot read something and just believe it, or start to question your own belief. If Yahoo answers page said Jesus is not God, would you start to doubt your faith? If some other resources said Eucharist is not true presence of Jesus, would you just go along with the lie and not receive Communion any more?

A Catholic believes Catholic Church’s teaching. Stick to your faith.
God bless!

God gave His Apostles, who were priests of the New Covenant the power to forgive sins. Scripture is clear on this. The Apostles passed this power on to their successors who are the Bishops and priests in the Catholic Church.

Also, the “christians” you are reading from misunderstand the Scriptures when it comes to Jesus Christ as Mediator between God and men. If jesus is the only mediator as they claim then that means you cannot even ask a living Christian to pray for you, something they violate all the time.

As Catholics, we’re not free to pick and choose those aspects of the Faith we like or dislike. Sacramental Confession is required at least once year by the Precepts of the Church. Certainly, we should approach the Sacrament more often. Protestant denominations would have you eliminate the “middle man” in terms of seeking forgiveness for sin. Again, read your Bible, speak to a Priest of Deacon concerning this issue. I’m personally glad you came to this forum concerning your question, and it’s here, and in the Church especially, that you’ll find the correct answer.
