SOme of these I’m sure I’ve mentioned before…

We were out of town when my younger son’s class made their First Confession, so we were left to our own devices to take him to confession before First Communion. We talked to Father one day after Mass, and he agreed to hear his confession. They both entered the confessional at the same time, with DS choosing the side with the screen (as if Father wouldn’t know who was on the other side). When they came out, DS went to say his penance, and Father came over to assure us that he had done a good job. Then holding back laughter, he explained that DS had started off by tapping on the screen and saying “Hello? Hello?? Is this thing on??”

Another time, I took both of my sons. Father’s standard penance was to say one Our Father. So after a few minutes, I leaned over and asked DS if he was ready to go. He replied that he had about 58 more minutes. I’m 🤷. Then I realized :newidea: he had gotten the one Hour Father. We still laugh about that.

Another time I was talking to my 9 or 10 year old and telling him that you were supposed to actually be sorry for the sins you confessed. He then told me that if he was actually supposed to be sorry for beating up his older brother that he might as well wait until he was about 40 to go to confession! I told that to Father and he thought it was hilarious.

Not too long ago, I took both boys again. They went in before me. I opened up the door on the face-to-face side when it was my turn, and Father looks at me and says “Cher, I might as well just give you absolution right now!” I know a good deal when I see one, but he was only joking! 🙂

I hadn’t been to confession in a number of years, but knew I needed to go. I finally picked a priest and picked a day ASSUMING that he heard confessions before daily Masses. I arrived early and sat near the back, but there was no one in the confessional or in line. Mass time was getting closer and closer. Finally one of the “church ladies” approached me and asked if I was waiting to go to confession and offered to go get Father. I knew this priest well, so I wasn’t offended when he showed up and asked me if “this would take long”. I told him if he didn’t talk too much, it wouldn’t. And it didn’t. It was a beautiful, life changing experience for me in a few short minutes. ❤️

I remember one time when I was still a very new Catholic, my Confessor told me to “do an act of charity” for my penance.

I’d been last in line, and there was only five minutes left before the start of Mass, so I ran outside, stopped the first beggar I saw, and gave him five dollars.

Later, after Mass, I was idly flipping through my prayer book, and ran across The Act of Charity. :o  😛
I got that penance too. I had no idea it was a prayer. I put $5 in the poor box on the way out of the church.
