Hello, everyone. Just posting to ask if anyone in the Boston area and surrounding towns knows churches that still use the old type confessionals or, at least, uses a barrier between the priest and the penitent. Thanks.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. It’s not the times of confessions I’m asking about, but how confession is done. Too often I find it’s simply face to face or side by side and I’m wondering if there are still churches using the old fashioned confessionals or, as I wrote, at least a standing screen between the priest and the penitent. I’ll probably resort to calling different parishes, but I thought I’d post here in case anyone might have an answer. Thanks again.

That is a good question. Our church, for instance, has walled up the entrance into the confessional where you could go to confession face-to-face. Now it is only behind the screen. I am not sure exactly why they would not allow anyone to go into the priest’s area to have face-to-face confession.

The old-fashioned confessionals are not very common in newer churches.

I believe that both priest and penitent are entitled to the screen, if desired, under current law, and that face to face is only by mutual consent.

Now, getting every parish to follow basic law is another matter . . .
