Confirmation and Eucharist

I am a DRE and I have a few children in my Confirmation program you have not received First Communion. Our Confirmation date is before our First Communion. Can these children recieve their Confirmation before they recieve First Communion

I do not see why not, but as dhgray said the best place to find the answer would be within your Diocese.

When someone enters the Church at the Easter Vigil they are baptized (if they need it), Confirmed, and then recieve First Eucharist.

This is also how we Byzantines do it, our infants are baptized and chrismated before the Divine Liturgy starts and then recieve First Eucharist at that Divine Liturgy.

It is possible that they could receive their First Communion at the Confirmation Mass. The usual 2 year study requirement is not used in the case of older children. They will have to prove that they understand what the Eucharist is and also make their first confession.

I direct the RCIA and Adult confirmation for my parish. It is my understanding that anyone above the age of reason, seven or so, must receive Confirmation before receiving First Communion. Since they are Confirmed before Communion time at the mass this usually occurs at the same mass.

Sister handles those younger than eighteen and has them receive both sacraments at the regular Parish Confirmation. I have those who are older receive both at the Easter Vigil Mass with the Catechumens and Candidates.

In this diocese at least we must receive specific permission from the bishop for those who were Baptized Catholic to receive Confirmation at the Easter Vigil, but that is routine paper work.

Sure, but why don’t they just receive their First Holy Communion at the Confirmation Mass from the hand of the Bishop. These two Sacraments are two of the three Sacraments of Initiation which the Bishop is specifically to oversee.

When I joined the Catholic chruch in the early 90’s via RCIA, I received confirmation then had holy communion at the same Mass.

in this diocese First Communion is usually at age 7, 2nd or 3rd grade, and Confirmation at age 16, 10th or 11th grade. If we have youth in the Confirmation class they make their first communion during the Confirmation Mass. There is not one and only one date for first communion the way there is for Confirmation, because our Church is not big enough for all the first communion class (28 from school, 144 from CCD, not including RCIA). We have first communions at all Masses during the Easter season.
