My fiance and I are getting married soon. On our wedding invitations, my fiance has used her confirmation name as well as her legal name, if I can paraphrase it is Bronwyn Joanna Therese Smith, with Therese being her confirmation name. I have known a few devoutly Catholic women who use their confirmation name professionally and also brides who have put their confirmation names on the wedding invitations. However, we have had some queries from non-Catholics about this practice.

What does the Forum think? I personally see great sense in Catholic brides using their confirmation name, especially where it is a name that has great spiritual significance for the bride-to-be.

Thank you to all.

Never heard of that practice, ever.

Frankly it is not surprising that it has bred confusion.

I haven’t heard of the practice either.

Anyway, some people have two or even more middle names. I would think most people would just assume it’s another middle name. But if not, it’s a nice chance to witness to the faith. No harm in it.

I’ve never noticed it before, however, if someone did use their confirmation name, I would just assume it was another middle name. I do know one person who changed his middle name to his confirmation name legally when he got married. (It’s free to do this when you get married, but not any other time, in my state.) He was a convert and his original middle name was Luther.

I have never heard of this either, however, I am not sure what you are asking? what does ‘queries from protestants mean’.

I find there are a lot of arguments when it comes to weddings and at the end of the day, all decisions belong to the bride and groom and it is tacky at best for people to give them a hard time

Thank you CM. That was my response as well.

The queries we have got are just polite inquiry for the main.

I’m wondering how they’d know to ask.

Unless your fiancée put

“Bronwyn Joanna Therese (Confirmation name) Smith”

on the invitation, why would anyone question the third name? I see many children with 3 and 4 given names when I do baptismal preparation. And we don’t take a new name at Confirmation in our parish.

Her aunts and uncles have asked but it is in good spirits. I have seen it done before so I was rather surprised.

I’ve never heard of this before either. I’d be confused too, though I’m not sure I’d bother saying anything. Thankfully their inquiries are polite, and if this is the only thing you have to answer to people about you are very lucky! Best of luck with the rest of the planning!

I think it’s a lovely idea! My husband uses his confirmation name quite often, so I don’t see that there is anything wrong with it. And if someone has a question about it, what a wonderful opportunity to talk about Confirmation, devotion to the saints, prayer… it’s all good!

If people are going to be confused by it - well, let them be confused. It’s her wedding invitation, let her put her confirmation name on it there if she wants. Stranger things have been done on wedding invitations than that!!

When I was in high school (oh, about a thousand years ago!), many of the Catholic students added their confirmation names to the “calling” cards that were inserted into the high school graduation invitations and announcements and traded with other students. Many brides also inserted their confirmation names in their wedding announcements that were printed in the newspaper; don’t remember how the invitations read. Don’t remember whether the guys used theirs in print, but some did go by the confirmation name or a combination of the given name plus confirmation name.

So if I understand correctly, this is NOT causing tension it is simply people asking since they have never seen that done before and you are just wondering if it is a well know custom?

It seems a little, I don’t know, maybe presumptuous is the word, to include the name on the invitation. It’s just a piece of paper that will almost certainly get thrown away, or set in a pile to some day in the undisclosed future be put in a scrapbook. It’s just a notice; it has nothing to do with the ceremony. An email or a text would transmit the same information with less fuss.

If she wants to include it during the vows, fine. Otherwise, just put the information people need on the invitation.

That’s what this forum-dweller thinks.

I didnt but then my name would have been huge as I have two confirmation names 😊

Thank you. Yes that was my view as well.

I always use my confirmation name. Most of my friends don’t even realize that it’s not my legal name! “Amber Christine Marie” is more than symbolism–it is literally who I am! 😃
