Unfortunately, I joined RCIA a few weeks after it started and wasn’t told about confirmation names until last night. Now I have to find one.

I wasn’t told about the process or anything, so I was just wondering if I could get some guidance on how to go about picking a confirmation name.

Can I pick any Saint? I have always been interested in St. Dismas, but from what I understand, he was never put through the canonization process. Does he meet the criteria for being a confirmation saint?

Thanks.

I had a confirmation student who chose Dismas a couple of years ago. It was fine with the Bishop.

My advice would be to start learning a little about the saints and pick one to be your patron. I chose Francis for my confirmation name and St. Francis never lets me down!

I also have great devotion for St. Edmund Campion, St. John Fisher and St. Thomas Aquinas.

Most Saints from the first 1500+ years didn’t have any formal canonization process. I think St. Dismas (the good thief, correct?) is an excellent choice.

God Bless

Yes, St. Dismas was the good thief. I just found something on the web that said he was the only human in history to be directly canonized by Jesus.

Thanks for the response.

Does the Bishop have to approve of the confirmation name? Is there any such scenario where the Bishop would not approve of the patron saint?

Thanks again.
Certainly not in my diocese, but as he did the confirmation, I would have expected him to have told me off if it was inappropriate!
