When students select a saint name such as St. Marina Margaret, does one present Marina Margaret as the saint name to bishop or is it presented only as Marina? Another one in question is St. Germaine Cousin, is it presented only as Germaine?

I have been a Confirmation Catechist for many years and we have always instructed the sponsors to present the first name. They definitely do not use the title of Saint and do not need to use other descriptors. It may easily be different in other dioceses.

Our bishop was annoyed when the kids didn’t specify which St Anthony, which St Catherine, etc. So at our parish, the kids are taught to say, “St Anthony of Padua.”

Same here. We have 42 kids being Confirmed in 2 weeks. Their name tags will say

Anthony of the Desert, or Toribio Romo, Catherine of Bologna, etc…in large letters.

The Bishop dislikes asking “which one?” 😉

The given (birth) name will not be on their nametag. We do the same for the RCIA folks.

You pick the first name (but be ready to tell the Bishop which saint, eg St Therese, he could ask, “Which St Theresa, the Little Flower? Of Avila? Mother Theresa?”
So have the research done. But put in the first name.

However I found that.the church teaches you CAN pick TWO confirmation names. Its ALLOWED.

Eg Mary Francis

Eg Therese Joan

(any two saints you feel called to pick)

Got a source for that? It’s our understanding that the need for Saint name at all is optional.

What about if your confirmation name is not a saint?
The whole point in the US Catholic Church if selecting a Saint name is to model your life on the life of the person who inspires you, as a special patron. It’s not about the name…it’s about the model for holiness.
Athletes pick St. Sebastian, Immigrants select St. Toribio Romo, Native Americans select Kateri Tekakwitha, kids who want to teach, Elizabeth Ann Seton, etc.
Some just love a particular Saint’s story, like Father Damien of Molokai.

That is what we do here as well, except that our students generally wear name tags.

My son, for example, chose St. Francis Xavier, but if he simply stated “Francis” that would have implied a different Saint.

So on his name tag, he had “Francis Xavier”

But back when I was confirmed, we wore short red stoles with our confirmation name on it.

In my case, my confirmation Saint was St Vincent Pallotti, but my stole simply said 'Vincent" on it, would also could imply St. Vincent Ferrer or St. Vincent DePaul.

So I greatly approve of having the full name available to the bishop
