Hi! My daughter is currently in the Confirmation program at our church and was told that she could not have a parent be a sponsor for confirmation. I was surprised, considering I had my mom as my sponsor when I received this sacrament. Can you not have a parent? and why? Would love to get an answer.

Thanks,
Chrisanne

a parent is specifically excluded from being a confirmation sponsor or baptismal godparent in canon law, because they are already the person with the main responsibility for raising the child Catholic and being a good Christian witness and mentor. It makes no sense for the parent to be “the person who assists the parent” in that task, and who takes over if the parent is unable to do it.

It is possible that you actually had another person as the designated sponsor, and your mother stepped in because that person could not be physically present at the time of your confirmation, but that is usually discouraged. and no, the presence or absence of the sponsor does NOT invalidate your confirmation.
