Confirmation

Hello everybody, I’m new here, and this is what first came to my mind for my first thread.

Well, I’ve been given the task to make a speech during the Confirmation retreat at my parish. Unfortunately for me, I’m not sure how to communicate with teenagers (8th/9th grade) It hasn’t been that long (I’m only 25), but I haven’t really kept up with pop culture. I have the rest of the week to write it.

My topic is “How we can see God around us” and the point I’ll be driving home is that while it’s wonderful to see the goodness in this world, we can’t stop there. We look at the created to see the Creator. After the speech, I have to do a project, originally a nature walk. Since we just came out of the Lenten season, I’m going to do the Stations of the Cross, but in a more hands on way, and I’ll be calling it Walking in the Footsteps of God. It sounded like a great idea the first time thinking about it, but I’m having a tough time trying to figure out what kids will respond to.

Anybody know what kids are into nowadays? Something I can use to get through to them?

The best way to communicate with teenagers is to be yourself.

They don’t expect or even want you to be familiar with their culture, so don’t worry about that. They really prefer for adults to act their own age.

That sounds really great!! I think they will really enjoy that.

The main thing is just to keep things simple and to the point - don’t use ten words where one will do, and summarize things frequently, so that they can keep up and be able to remember it for later on.

Also to clarify, while I do seek this information, I don’t plan on not being myself. I only want to know my audience better.
