Well, while was I mostly sitting home due to Covid travel restrictions here in the Philippines I got to thinking. Actually I have been thinking about this off and on for a few years.

My wife is a devout Catholic and my past is Baptist. In recent years I have been attending the Catholic Mass as a “non-catholic” for lack of a better term. I have become comfortable in the Catholic church and really feel at home in the traditions of the church. I have been wanting to officially convert to Catholicism for awhile. Everything I read described it a pretty lengthy process. With my job working on a ship and always coming and going I’m never in one place for more than a few months so I kept thinking it would be tough to complete the process. So, I kept going to Mass, but never took the Holy Communion. I have talked to my wife about all this.

A friend of ours here in the Philippines opened a fried chicken outlet, pretty good chicken too. We were invited to attend to opening. So we went. When we got there a Catholic Priest was blessing the place. After the blessing, we all sat down to eat and sample our friends fried chicken. Me being an American white boy it is pretty obvious that I am an outsider at any event here. The priest must of noticed that and asked my wife (evidently they knew each other) to introduce me to him. So, while we were eating the chicken and making small talk my wife whispered in my ear, “Is there something you want to tell him”? I thought for a second and then explained to the Priest my desire to convert to Catholicism. He asked me a few questions and then said he would put me in contact with the Diocese of our area.

To make a long story short, I met with a young Priest a few times and we talked. He gave me some stuff to read. He is a really great guy. Then he said that he was satisfied that I understood the foundation of Catholicism and that he could baptize me and do the Confirmation. I agreed. So on the Feast Day of St. Padre Pio I was confirmed as a Catholic. Returned that same day, attended mass and received the Holy Communion.

So, that’s it. I’m a Catholic.

Regards,
MC
