Hello all, I go to an Indult parish served by the FSSP and I had a question that was brought up in another thread. Anyways, before Communion of the faithful but after the priest has recieved Communion the two alter servers (if Low Mass) or the Deacon and Subdeacon (if High Mass) recite the Confiteor. After they finish the priest makes a 90 degree turn to his right and gives absolution which everyone then makes the sign of the cross.

My question is was this still done in the 1962 missal? If it was, my Angelus Press missal does not show it in the texts of the Canon of Mass.

Dominus vobiscum

It was ommitted in the 1962 Missal, but it is included in the red ecclesia dei books. So some indult Masses use it and some do not.

That begs the question - will you have to have an indult to say the confiteor before communion after September 14th? If it isn’t in the 1962 Missal…? 😃

The rubrics of the 1962 missal says:
Quoties sancta Communio infra Missam distribuitur, celebrans, sumpto sacratissimo Sanguine, omissis confessione et absolutione, dictis tamen Ecce Agnus Dei et ter Dómine, non sum dignus, immediate ad distributionem sanctæ Eucharistiæ procedit.
Additionally, in the directions for the Mass Ritus servandus in celebratione Missae, the reference to the second Confiteor was omitted.

Before the 1962 missal it read:
Si qui sunt communicandi in Missa, Sacerdos post sumptionem Sanguinis, antequam se purificet, facta genuflexione, ponat particulas consecratas in Pyxide, vel, si pauci sint communicandi, super Patenam, nisi a principio positae fuerint in Pyxide seu alio Calice.
If there are those who are going to communicate at Mass, the Priest after the reception of the Blood, before he purifies himself, a genuflection having been made, places the consecrated Particles in a Pyx, or, if few are to communicate, upon a Paten, unless from the beginning they were placed in a Pyx or another Chalice.
Meanwhile the minister extends before them a white linen or covering, and for them makes the Confession, saying Confiteor Deo, etc. Then the Priest again genuflects, and with joined hands turning himself to the people at the Gospel corner, says: Misereatur vestri, and Indulgentiam, absolutionem, et remissionem peccatorum vestrorum, etc., and with his right hand makes the sign of the Cross over them.
Afterwards genuflecting, he takes with the left hand the Pyx or Paten with the Sacrament, and with his right hand takes one particle, which he holds between his thumb and index finger slightly elevated above the Pyx or Paten, and turning to the communicands at the middle of the Altar, says: Ecce Agnus Dei, ecce qui tollit peccata mundi. Then he says: Domine, non sum dignus ut intres sub tectum meum, sed tantum dic verbo et sanabitur anima mea.
After 1962 it read:
Chatter163 was mentioning a decree that allowed the force of custom in places, so probably he’ll turn up and add more info on that (or you can pm him)

It’s certainly done by the FSSP Priest here, it seems for the reasons already cited.

I was informed that it was proper to do the Confiteor before Communion since there exists 1962 altar missals that do mention the Confiteor before Communion.

Personally, I like the second Confiteor. I have been to indult TLM’s at two different parishes in my diocese. One parish included the second Confiteor, whereas the other did not. I would expect the practise to be similar once more parishes start having TLM’s.

This is a question that has constantly come up in indult communities over the years. I, for my part, can’t remember ever having been to a '62 Mass without the second Confiteor (which only really covers about 3-4 different priests), but the rubrics seem pretty clear that the practice is expressly excluded from communion during Mass. The change makes sense, sense the practice arose when communion was typically administered after Mass, not during. I happen to like the rite, so I hope there is a good argument for custom, but given the face of the rubrics I would have to say it should not be done.
