My teacher wants me to read a book that happens to have blasphemous and vulgar language in it. I have to read it if I want to pass the class, but im afraid as to whether its offensive to God or not. I know it would be sinful or at least an ocassion of sin to read immoral literature for recreation, but since I have to read it to do well in class I’m confused as to whether I should read the book out of obedience to my teacher or fail the class for the sake of Christ.

How old are you? What level in school? What is the book?

1 and 2 are too personal.
The book is called “Go set a watchman”

She just asked for your age and school level, not your social security number…

But it’s impossible to give you decent advice without knowing your age. What’s appropriate for a 17 year old may not be appropriate for an 8 year old. It’s relevant to the question.

Have you read “Huckleberry Finn”? “The Catcher in the Rye”? “Of Mice and Men”? “Animal Farm” and “1984”? “To Kill a Mockingbird”?

wait, Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee? The sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird?

I don’t think it’s a sin to read that book even by the wildest stretch of the imagination.

That’s an important novel, but your question is impossible to answer without some idea of your age & grade. So you should talk to your parents about it.

LOL, I thought you were talking about Catcher in the Rye!

I can’t imagine that Go Set a Watchman would have so much bad language as to cause concern.

After I read something blasphemous, I say a little prayer like Praise be to His Holy Name!

A lot of literature has such language, as does life.

If you have trouble discerning, speak to your parents and your pastor.

That’s makes sense, though there are certain books that should never be read despite someone’s age.

Other than actual pornography or like a book of Satanic incantations, very few. Go Set a Watchman is probably not one of them.

Most adults are capable of reading a book that might portray language or conduct they don’t approve of and remembering that it’s just a book.

I would speak with a priest. If you are past the age of discernment, you are within your rights to question the moral implications of activities that you may be asked to undertake, regardless of their purpose.

The only “sin” in reading “Go Set a Watchman” is that IMHO it’s a mediocre book and was much better in its redrafted form as “To Kill a Mockingbird”.

Seriously, “Go Set a Watchman” is literature. Literature can contain characters speaking and behaving in ways that are not moral. It is usually not considered sinful for well-balanced adults to read, as long as the book doesn’t tempt them into committing other sins (such as lust, or imitating the bad behavior of the characters).

As others have said, since you’re not providing your grade in school or your age, it’s hard to give furthe advice here. I was assigned Harper Lee’s “Mockingbird” when I was about 16 and I was fine with reading it. (“Go Set a Watchman” was not published then.)
