Is conscience used when doing a mortal sin?

So to me conscience is a mental reminder of what the right thing to do in a situation is. I guess it would depend on what you have learned to believe is the right thing by experience, education, upbringing, etc. It probably would vary by person.

conscience is involved in our actions good or bad.

It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of an act, i.e. the subject / act, opposes God’s law. It also implies mental consent i.e. one is conscious enough for an act to be a personal choice to do the act.

Another way to put it is:
If you commit a mortal sin you did not employ a properly formed conscience.
If your conscience is malformed, you will not hear the voice of God speaking in you very well.
Newman called the conscience “the aboriginal vicar of Christ” . Through the conscience the individual interacts with that voice.
We can become deaf to that voice or it can be distorted.

We bear the responsibility to form our conscience so that we can hear it well and obey it well. A poorly formed conscience does not excuse evil.
