I think that we can divide decisions into two categories: (1) Conscious decision and (2) Subconscious decision. Subconscious decision are for those routine tasks that we master, like deriving. There could be several options available for a subconscious decision each option has its own weight. The weight, I believe, is calculated considering our sensory (name removed by moderator)uts, our needs, our modes and our experiences. It is easy to understand that subconscious decision has certain benefit for the agent because its needs, modes, etc are considered in the decision. The conscious decision is however up to agent, this option or that option. It doesn’t seem to have any benefit for the agent. This leads to the following questions:
  1. Why not all decisions are made subconsciously?
  2. What is the benefit of conscious decision?
  3. Do we make conscious decision when decision cannot be performed subconsciously?

You need to talk to this guy:
This question annoyed me for a while.

Consciousness can minimally be defined as ability to experience. It seems to me that we don’t need the experience if we want to be functional because our action just depend on external stimulus and how we are programed to act. So what is the use of consciousness?

Your thought?

Actually, all decision happens in the intellect and will, neither of which use a bodily organ (the brain), therefore all are not made in the conscious thought (none are made in conscious thought)

Conscious thought: “Should I do A or B?”
Conscious thought: “A has these benefits; B has those benefits.”
Conscious thought: “A has these defects; B has those defects.”
Non-Conscious Intellect: “A is good and doable and moral”
Non-Conscious Will: start motions toward A (the will does not have “speech”, only movement)
Non-Conscious Will: move an image of done decision to the consciousness, and move body to begin the approach to A.
Conscious Body: move toward A.
Conscious thought: “I choose A, good, doable, moral - I just like it more than B”

Without understanding there is a soul, this understanding is not valid to some; however, whether understood or not, this is what happens.

With things like driving, which are termed as “art” rather than as “will” or “choice”, there is a learned disposition to the proper movements at any conjunction of sensitive apprehension in front of you on the road - so that much occurs without “choice”, but is like natural movement, such as scratching your head.

I don’t think so. Consider Libet experiment. The subject becomes aware of its decision after decision is made by brain.

This is strange to me. I think that intellect and will are conscious faculties of soul. We make our conscious decision consciously. It is rather strange to believe the opposite. Moreover, the options are granted by brain which is unconscious, at least from soul’s perspective. You are believing completely opposite.

I think there are problems in your understanding.

I don’t simply believe that any action can be initiated without decision. You have options to drive left or right, you make decision unconsciously and drive left for example.
