NEW YORK, Dec. 6 – A panel of rabbis gave permission Wednesday for same-sex commitment ceremonies and ordination of gays within Conservative Judaism, a wrenching change for a movement that occupies the middle ground between orthodoxy and liberalism in Judaism.

Will Catholics be alone in upholding the virtue of chastity? It just seems like the churches are subject to the times and not the other way around. Their disection of the Old Testament prohibition was disturbing to say the least.

Well, to some extent, religions are subject to the times. Minds have been changing on the same sex couples issue. Polls have found as much as a 10% mind change in the past decade. Younger people, when polled, have a higher level of acceptance. When you have a circumstance where large percentages of the people don’t believe what a religion is teaching, you get a lower membership and a harder threshold to overcome in getting new adherents. In the States, religion is a marketplace of ideas. Conservative Judaism finds itself in this spot, because the Jews who are opposed to homosexuality tend to be Orthodox Jews already.

yes just heard this from Jewish friends at my former job, they are very distressed as their role in this institution is maintaining Jewish History Archives, and for them the whole topic of “Jewish identity” is very important. They belong to one of our town’s oldest most prominent conservative congregations, and feel very betrayed. According to them a rift such as that now experienced by Anglicans and Episcopalians, is imminent. These particular families are seriously considering return to Orthodoxy, even though they have been Conservative for over 100 years.

I read about this this morning. The article that I reviewed said that Conservative Jewish leaders were still condemning anal sex…say what?! Talk about sending a confusing message.
