You cannot start a religious community without the prior approval of a bishop and Rome. You can however become a lay institute of men or women. Still it is extremely important to have the support of the bishop like Rosalind Moss has done. With the approval of her bishop and Rome she started a new community in St. Lous.

Ros got the “fast track” treatment.

To get to the bishop’s office, one has to have a group of four who have persevered in living the rule, constitutions, and horarium for at least a year; remunerative work; stable novitiate house; and stable source of habit parts. THEN you can go to your bishop and ask for recognition. One also does this with a canon lawyer as guide.

Our Cloisterite Hermits begin their year’s journey with their rule in October, and this time next year, we will be evaluating whether to have the aspirants make their vows, or to disband.

Blessings,
Cloisters

Thanks everyone for your response. 🙂

I have done some more research on the topic (not enough though…I am a very busy person) and thanks to your guidance, I have started to become interested in the Franciscans.

From some of their websites, I learn that they place emphasis on community life, but also focus on prayerlife and contemplation. I know for myself that I am a social person and love to help people (so, hermit life wouldnt suit me for long). However, I also need quiet prayer and meditation.

Right now, I am looking at Conventual Franciscans, but I am sure that there are other good orders. Maybe someone with experience with Conventual Franciscans could assist me with this?

And what orders help with the community? Other than Mother Theresa’s Missionaries of Charity, what orders work in more abroad lifestyles (missionary-type work)?
How about checking out the Daughters of Charity? They have works in missionary, education, medicine, and others. The best way to find information is probably to contact the order you’re looking into and ask them to send information about their works and such.
