I am current a Mormon looking at the church. I am far from RCIA and have as one issue that concerns me, the Catholic church’ s authority, among other concerns.(the purpose of the rosary)

Does anyone have any recommendations for me as I learn more about the church?

how about Surprised by Truth, for a starter? It contains conversion stories by many people from different background (including the LDS Church) including their difficulties and stumbling blocks… good read!

I can tell you it’s scriptural, it traditional and most importantly it’s logical… here’s hoping you join us… we can sure use another member… if not in these forums at least in Christ Church… it’s known better by it’s everyday name… The Catholic Church… it’s one, it’s Holy and it’s Apostolic, and it’s home to a good many imperfect people… but like you we are still a work in progress…
Peace, and welcome… come on in the water is fine… 👍

You’ve come to the right place to start your journey home. The Catholic Answers Web-site offers plenty of resources and these forums will prove to be an excellent educational tool. May I suggest that you post some of your questions to the “Ask an Apologist” forum? You will get a succinct answer that will not contradict the Magisterium of the Church. Also, an excellent tool is the “Catechism of The Catholic Church”, I suggest that everyone, Catholic or those just interested in the Church, should own a copy. I always refer to my copy when I need an answer or need to ‘refresh’ my memory.

Welcome, and enjoy your journey.

God Bless

Hi there,

God bless you on your search…you have found home. Try to go to the EWTN website and find audio for the Journey Home…they have former Mormons that have converted to Catholicism and share their experience and testimony…they are very helpful…
You are not alone, my sponsor when I came into the faith was, actually, a temple veil worker, born and raised Mormon, who is now 100% Catholic. Their are answers to your tons of questions and we are here to help…
May the peace of Christ be with you on your journey 👍

This catholicoutlook.com/ is an excellent site for those with questions…click on the TOPICS section and there’s a whole list of items.

I spent a year in the LDS Church before I became Catholic so I kinda know where you are coming from 🙂

Well, the Mormon Church makes greater claims to authority than the Catholic Church, on far less historical evidence. I don’t see why if you can accept the former you should have any trouble accepting the latter.

I would recommend The History of the Church which was written by Eusebius in the fourth century. It demonstrates a continuity of doctrine and practise from the time of the Apostles to the conversion of Constantine. It should help you to see the falsity of the notion that the early Church completely apostatized and forgot the Gospel very soon in her history, and that God had to restore His true Church over a thousand years later through an American prophet. In this vein I would also recommend other works of early Church Fathers e.g. Ignatius, Clement, Polycarp, Justin Martyr, Ireneaus, etc.

Great ideas so far about resources to delve into related to your search! “Suprized by Truth” is one of my favorites. In terms of the Rosary…if you look at the mysteries upon which we meditate upon, you will find the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a beautiful way to contemplate all that He has done for us and continues to do through the Eucharist and the Holy Spirit. All of the other prayers are very scripturally based, including the Hail Mary (see Luke). The Holy Father wrote a wonderful Apostolic letter about the rosary called “Rosarium Virginis Mariae”. You can find it on www.EWTN.com’s website under library - Pope John Paul II’s writings. You will also enjoy getting to know the Holy Father a little better through his writings…God bless you in your search. Mary

Your timing is very good. Many parishes have inquiry classes that start in the fall, intended for people who may want to join the Church, those who want to resume an education in the faith that was interrupted for some reason, and those who are just curious. Such a course is intended to be a non-threatening lead-up to deciding whether to consider RCIA, but is also offered for those who just have questions and want an overview of the faith. You might inquire at parishes near you, or at the chancery office of the diocese in your area. These courses are free of charge and typically meet once a week.

Reading books is also a good option, and of course Catholic Answers is an excellent resource, but there is nothing like personal contact.

And by the way, if someone tells you something that just doesn’t sound right, be sure to ask one of the apologists at Catholic Answers for clarification, in case you misunderstood.

I like to recommend a book by Al Kresta entitled Why Do Catholics Genuflect? And answers to other Puzzling questions about the Catholic Church.I also like Kevin Orlin Johnsons Why do Catholics do that?
I have that on tape to listen to in my car.

The general consensus seems to be that the best route to go is through the books written about/by converts to Catholicism…such as the Surprised By Truth series.

I have to say I agree. I would also recommend Why Be Catholic? by William J. O’Malley…it’s a good read. God Bless you and welcome home!

Wow I don’t know how I could add to such a wonderful resource list, but here goes. The beginner apologetics series, it has 9 books were ones that helped me. Really the first book is all you need. Also This is the Faith by cannon francis ripley. My priest recommended catholic encyclopedia of catholic doctrine(or dogma)By Our Sunday Visitor, it is around $40, but I have found it used for $17. Before I would by it, see if your parish or one near you might have it that you could borrow it. It will answer a lot of questions. Good luck and I hope to see you come home very soon. You won’t regret it. God is working on you.
