That’s true! But nowadays we kind of have to be careful with that… Hence the reason people receive special blessings to take communion to the sick, or need special dispensation to reserve the Sacrament in their home.

The container is called a pyx, and you usually have to have special permission to do that. Then they have special dispensation to take communion to the sick.

It may be some people who the priest already know personally and they have someone who is homebound so they are regularly entrusted to take the Eucharist home to their loved one at home.

Actually, this has always puzzled me, as most people, myself included, seem to find it more natural to reverse these instructions, i.e. use the right hand as a throne for the left, then use the right hand to pick up the Host from the left hand palm.

For right-handed people, doing it St. Cyril’s way would result in having to use the more awkward left hand to pick up with.
Obviously this wouldn’t apply to left-handers, but surely even then they were the minority, so it seems strange that he gave instructions that would suit them more than the majority. Perhaps St. Cyril was himself left-handed.

Or perhaps people were ambidextrous in those days.

Once some time ago I went foreward to take the host and returned to the pew knelt on the knee rests and took the host then. A woman corrected me saying that she noticed this and that the host needed to be consumed in front of the priest or whomever was holding the hosts. Is this so? I assumed she knew what she was talking about and consumed the host before returning to my seat from then on.

This is true. A friend of mine who did some mission work in Haiti said that people often try to take the host back home for use in voodoo rituals. Since there’s no way of knowing what someone’s intentions are when they come up for Communion, it’s best to require everyone to consume it right there.

I have heard before speculation about Satanic people who come to church to snag a consecrated host for a Black Mass or other nefarious purposes, but I have really not seen much documentation or studies to back up the speculation with pesky facts and figures. Pure Satanism has very, very small influence anywhere you go in the world. Even less so are organized groups who would hold a Black Mass. And this time marks the first I have heard that there is a black market (no pun intended?) where consecrated hosts are bought and sold! LOL! To me, this assertion only proves that this is wild speculation and fear of the unknown. I am not denying that Satanism exists, but here, have some statistics.

Adherents.org says there were 20,000 Satanists in the United States as of 1996-1998. This number is a precipitous drop from 1982 when there were 100,000 and can possibly be explained by the different sources cited.

Another site claims that the Army estimated a number of 10-20,000 in the late 70s.

Now consider the Satanists as akin to Catholics and imagine how many Satanists don’t go to Black Mass. Now imagine of that fraction, how many hosts they will need for a single Black Mass however often they do it. I would also say that many people who are viewed by Catholics to be allegedly Satanist are merely death metal fans into bands like Slayer and screaming lead singers with pentagrams on their t-shirts, or are occultists of varying sects and practice and wear a lot of black and when they speak, they use a strange lexicon of magickal spells and hexes, which is far from true Satanism.

The numbers just don’t hold up for me - there can be no widespread conspiracy or active market for consecrated hosts. I would say that the market for curious atheists who want to purchase a host consecrated by Benedict XVI is much stronger. And the Holy Father proves this somewhat in his reasoning for not permitting Communion in the Hand. The Vatican has stated that many people like to take home a souvenir, and this is not appropriate for the Eucharist.

I can admit to my own sin and tell you that when I was a lapsed Catholic, I went to my mother parish one day and received communion in the hand, and promptly slipped it in my coat pocket. I can’t begin to tell you why I did it - it certainly wasn’t for a Black Mass, but I did listen to some occultist music at the time. I think frankly that it was a combination of my instinctive desire to go to Mass and receive Communion coupled with my guilty conscience which knew I could not worthily receive Him. I am sorry to say that I can’t remember what I did with the Body of Our Lord eventually. But I assure you that it wasn’t used in a Black Mass.

And why would they need more than a single consecrated host? Our Lord is present (body, blood, soul, and divinity) in every host. They don’t hand them out like communion, so do not require many hosts. They use a single host and desecrate it, as you can clearly see from some of the accounts I posted below.

Satan Worshipers Steal Consecrated Hosts
KANNUR (ICNS): Catholics in a parish in Kannur diocese suspect the involvement of Satan worshippers in the disappearance of consecrated hosts from a shrine.

be that said----i encourage and teach my students to partake of the host immediately but tell them it is to prevent dropping or loosing a sacred object and to partake of God’s grace immediately(my students are young too)—i alsoencourage them to gaze at the altar and give thanks before they turn to go to their seats—this is usually their first time and this hopefully prevents any negative habits later such as popping it in the mouth on the way back

It really does matter. Unless the priest knows you well, how is he going to know you aren’t going to do anything bad with it? Do you want him to be distracted by having to watch you until you consume?

The easiest thing is to receive communion, make one step to the side (still facing the same direction), consume the Host, and then return to your seat. You don’t hold up the line, and you are clearly in view of whomever is distributing the Eucharist. It is the most polite solution for everyone and shows proper reverence for the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. You shouldn’t be consuming the Host while you are doing something else (like walking back to your seat).

Or of course if you are very concerned about holding up the line, you can just receive on the tongue.

I may have said it wrong. I meant to say i place it in my mouth before i walk back to my chair but it takes me a bit of time to sollow it. so walking back to where i was sitting with it will in my mouth.
