I know a little. A lot of people think they are the next best thing to a satanic cult. They’re not. The entire thrust of this mode of prayer is Christian, arising from Cistercian models, although it appears on the surface to parallel certain Eastern (as in Asian) mind-clearing practices.
The Desert Father of Bethlehem Hermitage strongly advocates this approach to prayer, and has urged me to explore it and even to become a group leader. I found that it just ain’t for me.
Centering Prayer also encourages Lectio Divina (now THAT is something I can relate to) as a lead-in to a more direct experience of the presence of God.
I say: check it out. Don’t think of it as the be-all-and-end-all of prayer. And don’t be scared off by people who will tell you that it is godless paganism.
