Went with the wife to the OB/GYN office for the first pre-natal visit…It’s a huge doctor’s complex with a bazillion Drs…anywho…everywhere you turned, there were little ads for BC pills…even the covers on the stirrips were logos for BCPs…the little wheel thingies that calculate due dates? Ortho-Try-cyclen.

I mean, it was on everything!

Our Dr. is Catholic, though…he has 4 kids.

Pilot,
That’s ‘norm.’ Glad to hear that your doctor is Catholic. Bonus points for you! 😃

Peace, Jen

I was in an office once that had a nicely decorated basket in the ladies room-- it was full of condoms. —KCT

Shortly after learning I was pregnant for the second time, I had my first appointment with my OB. It started with a general question session with his nurse. She asked at that time if I wanted to have my tubes tied as soon as the baby was delivered.

Although I didn’t have a problem with sterilization at that time – I very much do now – I thought this was a really strange time to ask the question and expect a well-thought-out, long-term answer.

Overall, I was very happy with my doctor and appreciate the care he gave me in what turned out to be a tough pregnancy. However, I now see a Catholic OB/Gyn who understands that I will follow Church teachings.

Talk about feeling slimmed!! Get the Ghostbusters out there!!

Warning: “Catholic Doctor” does not always equal prolife/faithful to the Church’s teaching. 😦 Though 4 kids is a good indicator. 😉

My wife has had that experience …her doctor’s office support staff act is if they are taking your restaurant order …today’s special …

Considering the complex probably wasn’t prolife, even though your doctor was, some of that stuff may be free donated stuff from the companies as an effort to promote it for the exact reason you stated- it was everywhere, and you noticed it! 😦

I remember when my wife was discharged both times from our HMO hospital, the discharge nurse walked in with a prescription for BC all ready to go. When my wife said no thank you, the nurse just said, “Well get it filled anyway. When you change your mind you will already have them.” With our third daughter, who came so fast we didn’t make it to our HMO hospital, they never even brought it up when she was discharged. I often wonder if HMO’s promote BC so they will have less patients costing them money.😦

How about those TV ads. The women seem so virginal as they frollick about. The ads make ABC seem so pure and liberating.

Drug reps are famous for the amount of freebies they hand out.

So true!! Those ads are so ridiculous!!

I am seeing a good Catholic ob/gyn who is in full accordance with Catholic teaching. She never prescribes birth controls to her patients and does not recommend any procedure not in line with Catholic teaching. She is an expert in Natural Family Planning and encourages my husband and I in our faith. We are seeing her to help us with our infertility and we know that even if we don’t become pregnant, we did not do anything immoral along the way. She is a breath of fresh air compared to the other doctors I’ve seen.

How did you find your Catholic doctor? Is there a search online you can do or anything?

the formerly Catholic hospital (old St Ann’s in Cleveland on Fairhill) where I had my first 2 kids, with great care by nursing staff, great assistance and encouragement of breast feeding, even a nun as charge nurse, never a peep about BC even from my Jewish doctors. the hospital was taken over by Kaiser before the third was born, and we joined Kaiser, the prototype of HMOs when my husband started teaching. (no insurance for first 2). Doctors, I saw one of 4 in the group for every appointment, pushed tubal relentlessly as if 3 kids before age 24 were some kind of anomaly. Could not get them to bring me baby for breastfeeding until almost 24 hours after birth, BC Rx was standard with discharge instructions. so you tell me.

Absolutely. The website is www.fertilitycare.org. On that page you will find a bar called Directory on the left side. Click on that. Scroll down to find your state and it will give you a listing of doctors in your area. These doctors are working in accordance with the Pope Paul VI Institute which was featured on Relevant Radio and EWTN. They deal with women’s reproductive health using the Creighton Model and NaPro Technology–the website will tell you more about it. Hope this helps!!
