So there is no excuse now for any of you. No claiming invincible ignorance when you get to the pearly gates…No claiming Father X told me it is ok. So erm give up this sin or prepare to suffer in hell 😃

While I do agree with you that contraception is grave matter, there is a logical fault with your statement:
John of Woking:
No claiming Father X told me it is ok.
I don’t know about this. If a priest and some anonymous dude on the 'net disagree about a matter of Church teaching, I really can’t blame a person for believing the priest.

And, of course, in order for an action to be a mortal sin, there still has to be complete consent.

why this:D ???

john, why???
i don’t get it . you’re talking of suffering in HELL. does the idea sink into you?
why that gleeful smiley at the thought of someone going to hell?
even if it was the worst sinner, i’d say feel sorry for his/her going to hell, coz that’s another soul made in the image and likeness of god who has unmade himself/herself.
and what’s the point of this thread?
did you want a discussion on this at all or were you just voicing your opinion?

This is the same flawed type of argument that the Baptists use when they say all the Jews and non-Christians are going to hell because they’ve been “told” that Jesus is the Savior. There’s sending out the Word, and then there’s receiving the Word. If you send it out, it still has to be received and believed. And, just saying, “well, I told you…” doesn’t cut it. A person could hear it a million times and still be in ignornace… and YOU are not the judge of that John.

Sounds like what one of my friends told me:

Q: Is it a mortal sin?

A. It is now.
😛

i really don’t think any of us has the right to claim that such aand such a person has or wil go to hell. even the church does not do that. sure, the church says that certain sins can send us to hell and defines the conditions of a sin being mortal but it never specifies that any paricular person will end up in hell.

just like the thief on the cross, even the greatest of sinners may recieve god’s infinite mercy at the last moment of life which you and i do not know about.
while a agree with 1ke’s argument about hearing and recieving the word, i would also say that even if a person knowingly and willfully uses contraception (thus making it a mortal sin), god can, in his infinite mercy, forgive the person who is truly repentant and we can’t exercise summary judgement on anyone.

Hey, John,

The Church doesn’t even teach that Hitler’s in hell.

Q: How do you know someone’s consent?

A: YOU DON’T!

It was meant to be tongue in cheek. I am just fed up with cafeteria catholicism…If at first you don’t succeed try another priest…

I didn’t say they are going to hell…just that they should prepare for it as it is a mortal sin and excuses might not wash come Judgment day

Ok maybe I should try a different tact. 😃 Ok anyone considering using contraception because other good Catholics do it should cease now under pain of commiting a sin of grave matter. Please because I fear many will be tortured in hell because of this sin :crying:

that’s more like it!!!

sorry i misunderstood.
i hope you understand,
thanks

what if ur married but u dont want children right away? do u just not have sex? or can u use something? and why is it a sin?

They should have a little smiley face icon with a tongue… so we know when people are being “tongue in cheek”… thanks for clarifying!

Nolai,
Many in the church would encourage one who does not want children right away to practice Natural Family Planning… the “Catholic contraception”. The primary difference is that NFP is natural whereas most forms of birth control are aritifical.

I personally feel that NFP is artificial too, however, most in the church do not.

The only exception would be the use of the pill for non-contraceptive reasons. Otherwise, it is a grave matter!

in artificial contraception, the procreative aspect of sex is rejected with the real intention of having only the unitive aspect or only for pleasure.
the church teaches that the unitive and procreative aspects of sex cannot be separated licitly.
in NFP, there is no sexual act, thus the sexual act is not split in purposes as in artificial contraception.
of course, it is important to consider the motives while using NFP also. if it is used for the sole purpose of not having children for selfish reasons, then it really does reduce to the level of artificial cotraception. the important thing is to remain open to new life.
