Hi All,

I have an issue that i wanted to double check on. Basicallly the situation is that my wife can’t have children (When i say she can’t have kids, it is scientifcally impossible for this to happen.), but to maintain her womanly functions she requires the hormones from the contraceptive pill (prescribed by her doctor to help her out).

Is this immoral?

It’s immoral to use the pill for contraceptive purposes in consensual intercourse or any marital intercourse, but it isn’t immoral to take the pill for medical purposes. I’d rather try anything else than the pill for the reason that pills often happen to be abortifacients. Let’s suppose the pill fails as a contraceptive: it probably could still work as an abortifacient. I’m not an expert, so I don’t know this for sure. But the Catechism expressly says that it’s allowed to use contraceptives for medical purposes if there’s no intention to contracept.

My wife takes the pill in hopes it will help us have children later. If she is not on it her periods can be excruciating and the damage it does to her body would have made her unable to cary a child. I think in this case as with yours the pill is being used for a legitimate medical puroise and I don’t see anything wrong with that.

Consider looking for an NFP only physician and see if you can get the hormones your wife needs from good hormones, as opposed to the synthetic ones in the pill. I was told by a doctor that the pill has 2 uses accepted by the FDA, contraception and achne. There are better ways to get the hormones your wife needs…assuming you have a doctor willing to deal with it.

try www.omsoul.com and search for NFP only physicians. I believe those trained at the Pope Paul VI institute have insight into using hormones as opposed to the pill.

Good luck and God Bless
