I believe the basis–the genesis–of the culture of death is the acceptance of contraception as a positive advancement in medicine and women’s health. The way I see it, the power of fertility is woman’s greatest asset. Even infertile women benefit from the respect given women for their unique gift of nurturing–one does not have to actually bear a child to possess the power of womanhood. Society should simply respect the woman’s unique ability given her by God in the form of her femininity.
My point is that contraception is a denial of a woman’s femininity–it devalues women. And in doing so, women willingly give up their unique power. Over time, it has become ingrained–so much so, childbearing is in fact disdained by many–women and men. This disdain is transferred to the personhood of the woman–and then…to the person conceived in her womb. Thus, abortion becomes more prevalent and more tolerated.
Furthermore—children, whose existence has been reduced to a “choice”, lose their inherent value in the eyes of a warped society. It becomes easier to see them as a burden rather than a gift. When children are seen as a burden, abuse becomes more prevalent.
And, if children are burdens because they require sacrifice and attention, so too are the aged and the disabled because they can’t or can no longer "contribute’ to society. Thus, they too are disposable and their elimination (death) becomes a supposed merciful release from undesirable circumstances.
I believe it begins with contraception…but where does it end?
