… The artist is very good and I think some people ought to get their minds out of the gutter. I would not have noticed if I had not read the article.
Well, that’s the San Damiano crucifix ruined for me.😦
Agreed. 😦

I think it’s a non-issue. The article provides a Google images link to other pictures of crucifixes done in that style, and they all include variations on the abdominal detail that the artist in question provided. There appears to be a long tradition of detailing Christ’s body in that manner.

Does that mean that this artist did not deliberately modify the usual detailing in order to get away with something crude? No – I can see why people might think they see something other than a distended abdomen – but I just don’t think that’s what’s going on here.

Peace,
Dante

The odd thing is that the artist was more faithful to the original than the other examples. The way she did the distended abdomen is almost identical to the real San Damiano Crucifix, so if she’s guilty of anything it’s in being true to the original.

Peace and God bless!

I saw this on another forum a few weeks ago.

I really really really dont think this was intended.

but then again, it doesn’t even look like natural stomach.

THAT ICON MUST BE REMOVED AND THE ICON MAKER AND CHURCH ADMINISTRATOR EXCOMMUNICATED. It does look like a Penis! And is positioned in the same area except it pulled up. The icons maker and the parish administrator is trying to pull off a sacreligious stunt or something!!!:mad::mad:

wow

Perhaps a sarcastic response? It does get difficult to convey that through text sometimes.

Anyways, I think it’s pretty sad that when people look at something as classic as the San Damiano cross, this is what they focus on. It’s not intentional, nor is it that difficult to look past. I had someone point this out to me months ago, and at first it was disconcerting but if you want to you can easily get your mind not to focus on that. People need to take a step back and realize that they do have some authority over how they think.

looked at and dont like it… maybe innocent but gives Anti Christians ammunition to make fun…

what is Religion of Artist… ???

Common sence ???

The Iconographer is an Orthodox Christian…as is the Icon…perfectly Orthodox!

People tend to be excommunicated for heresy, not production of artwork. Also excommunications are not to be permanent, but corrective. The artist is already planning to maodify the artwork, making excommunication irrelevant. Unless of course you are attempting to satirize extreme reactions.

 Good grief! 1) The Icon maker is Orthodox, not Catholic. 2) She did not intentionally put a phallus there.

Warning! Do not click on links below if you find nudity and the depiction of male genitalia in art offensive in any way! :bigyikes:

Using your logic, we should destroy the
Ravenna, Arian Baptistery. from 500 AD, after all, Jesus is nude and you can clearly make out his genitalia in the tesserae tiles. And destroy Pietro Perugino’s famous painting of St. Sebastian from the 15th century, because you can see the saints genitalia through the sheer wrap girding his loins. :banghead:

See what Christopher West and Blessed John Paul have to say on the subject of Authentic Art vs. Pornography.

Oh my:o I guess discussing what Michael-Angelo REALLY painted in the Sistine Chapel or his statue of DAVID would be taboo???

WOW!!! I never would have believed it.😊 But after reading the responses my suspicions have been validated! THE INTERNATIONALIST MARXISTS OF THE BILDERBURG SOCIETY and Pro-islamic AL-QUIDA have infiltrated the VATICAN, CONSTANTINOPLE and left wing information outlets after all!:D:D:D

Christ is Risen!

Easy on the caps there. Take a deep breath.

I have a copy of the original here in my office. The lines are a bit faded, but it’s basically the same work. I’ve been staring at this depiction of Our Lord crucified for over a year now, and it took being pointed out for me to notice. It seems to me that this is an excellent teaching point from priest to congragation on the nature of art, history and the real suffering of the crucifixion.

***I prefer my copy of the original, by far. What do I think? It really doesn’t matter what I think. The lady has agreed to remedy what some folk have taken offense to, so perhaps the matter should end there. Personally I see no offense…forgive and forget.

Blessings,

Douglas***
